The Role
As Head Sommelier, you’ll be taking the reins of a highly regarded establishment’s wine program. You’ll run the wine program, negotiate prices with reps, build new relationships and maintain old ones, work with the cost controller, have a creative license, and train the team, all while maintaining a first-class style of service.
This is a chance to take on a seriously regarded wine list and build on it. You’ll be quite hands-on during service and working on the list and your duties outside of service. It’s all about leading from the front and being a solid presence on the floor.
The clientele includes some of Sydney’s top corporate figures, so it’s crucial to carry yourself with confidence and expertise. These are individuals with personal wine cellars who know their preferences, making it essential to impress them with your charm and in-depth wine knowledge.
As the Head Sommelier, you’ll oversee the award-winning wine list, a role that will surely make you the envy of your peers. This position also involves extensive in-house training, where you’ll mentor and guide the floor team. Additionally, we’re seeking someone who truly embodies “hospitality,” creating a warm and inviting atmosphere for every guest.
The Required Experience
Ideally, you possess a strong presence and a deep understanding of restaurant service, with an abundance of positive energy and confidence. Staying calm under pressure, being a natural motivator, and, of course, having a true passion for wine are all essential qualities.
Exceptional wine knowledge is crucial for this role, along with excellent organizational and communication skills.
