The Business

The business is close to Sutherland in Sydney’s south. It is really well established and has a large and loyal following. It takes the providence and quality of its ingredients and supplies seriously and is one of the highest quality bakeries in the Sydney suburbs.

The business is set up to launch and now needs assistance to shift the business into the next gear — Production or Operations Manager being one of this. There is a stable and loyal employee base of 10. Also, they have a base of operations where they do all their production. The facility has been set up in preparation for this next phase. Currently, they are only running at about 30% capacity; therefore, 70% more to go before being fully operational. There is going to be so much growth here.

The Culture

The culture is really one of the best things about it. Commercially, it’s strong brand-wise. The launch is going to be a large growth phase and they’re at the top of their game. All of this is built off the culture within the team. In a nutshell, it is a culture of people that genuinely care about what they do. That’s what we want for someone to fill this role, buy-in and follow-through beyond the job.

The person must have a structured and laser-like approach to getting things done and in executing ideas and projects. It’s still at its core a very flat structure business where people get along. They do the job well and there’s no place for big egos and big job titles.

The Role

Ideally, we are looking for someone with strong operations background, with 2-4 years prior relevant experience in a role that is hands-on.

Your experience and in-depth knowledge will have been gained in similar leadership roles in Food Service, Food Manufacturing / Retail. We are also looking for the following attributes:

  • Similar food Production / Manufacturing relevant experience in small to medium-size business
  • Very high EQ and strong leadership
  • Experience in fast growth, dynamic businesses
  • Strong HACCP and Food Safety understanding and implementation experience
  • Proactive leadership capability with the ability to achieve results quickly and influence the team
  • A strategic and lateral thinker
  • Experience in successfully leading and implementing change
  • The proven ability to work in a hands-on role while still focussing on major long term projects

Key Areas/Projects

The business is running profitably and efficiently but there’s always room for growth. With this next phase of expansion, there is a couple of key areas for this person to head up and drive beyond the day-to-day operations.

Operations is the most important and the focus for this role. In a small growing business, it’s important that this person is flexible and while keeping their eye on the prize with the big projects and driving the macro elements of the business. Also being able to jump in and assist when the things come up. You need to know your way around a small food service business with production and retail.

Retail The owner of the business has been approached many times over the previous years to take over various sites. Being clear on the brand, customers and positioning in the market, he’s been very selective and waiting for the right opportunities. There’s a premium site which they have now found. The final stages of securing this would be the first of two or three this year ideally.

This operations manager role will be key in rolling out and overseeing these retail stores, so experience in retail would be preferable.
